Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic oil massage that involves the application of warm oil using slow, rhythmic strokes from scalp to feet. This treatment is often chosen for its deeply nourishing and grounding qualities, as well as the way sustained oil application and continuous contact can support a sense of physical ease and settling in the body.
People often choose Abhyanga when they’re feeling dry, depleted, tense, or ungrounded, or when they’re seeking a warming, full-body experience. Abhyanga is sometimes paired with Shirodhara to balance mind and body. In traditional Ayurveda, self-Abhyanga is also practiced at home as a supportive routine. Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment involving a continuous, gentle stream of warm oil applied across the forehead. The rhythmic flow and sustained contact are traditionally associated with a deeply settling sensory experience, and many people seek Shirodhara for its calming, quieting effect on the mind and nervous system.
Shirodhara is often chosen by those who feel mentally overactive, overstimulated, or unable to fully rest. When paired with Abhyanga, the combined experience offers an extended period to further integrate balance into both the mind and body.
